This year Kodak will extend its presence through numerous and solid partnerships such as Ace (Atelier du Cinéma Européen), the CST, the Short Film Corner, Straight 8, Film Schools and some national pavilions. In 2011, Kodak Entertainment Imaging is renewing its partnership with International Critics' Week: a prestigious jury will give out the Kodak "Prix Découverte", a prize awarded to reveal new talent, given to young directors of short films.
ACE – Ateliers du Cinéma Européen
Independent European Producers Association
Rendez-vous: Two breakfasts on the 14th and 15th from 9:00AM – only for producers
ACE is an independent producers’ association created 18 years ago and based in Paris/France. It gathers 180 members in 35 countries (most EU countries plus Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Argentina, Chile, Columbia, Russia, Israel, Turkey, Serbia). It is supported by the EU through MEDIA, and by public and private bodies from 11 EU countries.
The association’s main activity is counseling and training in the field of feature film co-production. Every year, ACE welcomes 16 EU independent producers (with a project in development) to participate in the training programme. This small number of participants is the key of a good and rapid integration of the new members in the ACE Community and of a personalised and effective follow-up. The ACE workshops offer high level and practical training through case studies, group sessions and individual meetings. Furthermore, they are a unique opportunity for the producers to get feedback on their project from key players of the international industry (sales agents, distributors, funds, script consultants, etc) and from their peers as well, all of them being potential partners.
ACE is also a powerful network, extremely useful for its members when looking for a reliable partner in a country they are not familiar with. The association organizes events in many places all year long and is present at all major festivals and markets (Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, Toronto, Rome, Locarno, etc).
These last years, ACE members have regularly been awarded prizes in international film festivals and in German, French, British, Spanish and other European film Academy Awards. Three of them have been nominated this year at the American Academy Awards for the best foreign film: Luc Déry (Canada) and Miléna Poylo (France), producers of Incendies and Yorgos Tsourgiannis (Greece) producer of Dogtooth. The ACE producers Cedomir Kolar (France) and Josef Aichholzer (Austria) already obtained this supreme recognition from their American peers and competitors in the past with No Man’s Land and The Counterfeiters respectively.
Since 2009, ACE has opened its doors to non-EU producers, who have joined the community through the ACE Mundus Programme. ACE now has members from Canada, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, Columbia, Israel, Turkey, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia and Russia.
The association also develops activities outside the borders of Europe, in territories with a strong market and creative film industry (Asia, Latin America). ACE recently launched several new initiatives such as the ACE Co-production Lab in Japan and the ACE Co-production Lab in Hong Kong and the Austral Industry Meetings in Chile, during the Valdivia film festival.

La Semaine de la Critique: A breath of fresh air

Bernardo Bertolucci, Jean Eustache, Otar Iosseliani, Ken Loach, Wong Kar Wai, Jacques Audiard, Arnaud Desplechin, Guillermo del Toro or even Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu all started at la Semaine.
Shorts
Within its research of new filmmakers, La Semaine has always paid great attention to short and medium length films, first steps in the career of a director. It is by presenting their short films that la Semaine de la Critique revealed the talents of François Ozon, Gaspar Noé and Andrea Arnold.
Over the last few years, La Semaine has extended its work with short and medium length films and has tried to support the new talents even more. Kodak has always been supportive to this initiative. Many short and medium length films recently selected at La Semaine were under prestigious spotlights such as:
- 2011 French Academy Awards – Logorama (François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy & Ludovic Houplain, France) winner of Best Short Film
- 2010 Academy Awards – Logorama (François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy & Ludovic Houplain, France) winner of Best Animated Short

straight 8
Straight 8 at Cannes film festival
Rendez-vous: English pavilion Village International Wednesday May 18th 7:30 pm
Every year Straight 8 invites anyone, anywhere in the world to make a film on a single cartridge of Kodak super 8 film. There’s no editing or retakes - everything has to be created in camera, shot by shot, on one roll of film.
The films are returned to straight 8 unprocessed and unseen, so selected filmmakers don't see their films until they're screened to packed-out film festival audiences.
Since 2003 we’ve premiered the very best straight 8 films of the year at Cannes film festival with Kodak. The screening is always packed to capacity and the sheer energy of the Cannes event is extraordinary.
People talented enough to be chosen for the Cannes straight 8 screenings know that their film must be good, but they still have to come to the event to see it for the first time easy jetting to Cannes, camping or even sleeping on the beach, talking to people about their film, whilst not yet having seen it themselves… filmmakers have come from the UK, Germany, Mexico, Vancouver to name a few places.
The hardnosed professional film community at Cannes has embraced straight 8 too. Teary-eyed comments such as these are regularly heard after straight 8 at Cannes…
- “That made my Cannes - it’s the most refreshing thing I’ve seen for years”
- “It’s amazing to see so much raw creativity - it reminded me why i got into the business in the first place”
