Breaking Bad • “No Mas” • AMC

Michael Slovis was born and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey. He began taking pictures when he was 12 years old after his grandfather gave him his first camera. Slovis studied cinematography at New York University. He began his career as an electrician and gaffer, and has earned some 30 cinematography credits for episodic television series and feature movies since 1995. His credits include episodes of the TV series Ed, Royal Pains, Castle and Fringe. He won an Emmy® for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in 2006 and received another nomination for CSI in 2007. This is Slovis’ second consecutive nomination for Breaking Bad.

Breaking Bad follows a high school chemistry teacher who learns he’s dying of cancer. He takes up a new career as a methamphetamine producer in hopes of earning enough money to take care of his family. In “No Mas,” Walt (Bryan Cranston) faces a new threat on a new front and deals with an increasingly angry Skyler (Anna Gunn), who must consider what to do next with her life and the kids'. Meanwhile, Jesse (Aaron Paul) comes face-to-face with some startling self-revelations.

“One of the great things about shooting film is the way the highlights are rendered, which is important on a show that takes place in New Mexico. I do a lot of little hot spots and let things burn out. Film handles that in a softer way that is very pleasing to the eye. I try to use the entire sensitometric spectrum, keeping something very bright and something very dark in each frame.” — Michael Slovis
