Eigil Bryld grew up in Denmark and began working at a local television station as a teenager. Envisioning a career in documentaries, he earned a degree in film and video production at Gwent College in Wales, where he studied under well-known Magnum still photographer David Hurn and became interested in narrative feature filmmaking. He began working in the commercial realm in London, and eventually relocated to New York City. His documentary credits include Arena: Jayne Mansfield, The Kind Face of Death, and Wisconsin Death Trip, which earned a BAFTA Award for best factual photography. His photography on Crime and Punishment earned a Royal Television Society Award nomination, and his work on Charlie Butterfly won Most Innovating Cinematography at the 2003 Madridimagen festival. His other credits include To Kill a King, Oh Happy Day, Kinky Boots, Becoming Jane, In Bruges, and the forthcoming Tilda.
You Don’t Know Jack stars Al Pacino as Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the controversial doctor-assisted suicide advocate who went to prison in the 1990s for helping terminally ill people control the way their lives ended. Directed by Barry Levinson and filmed in New York City for Michigan, the HBO production examined the complex character of Kervorkian, which mixed vanity and hubris with genuine compassion.
“Working with Barry (Levinson) was an extraordinary experience. He has so much confidence and such a strong vision. Of course we talked a lot beforehand, but his way of working is to arrive on the set and respond to the material and the situation with his incredible intuition. We found a method of shooting and lighting that disrupted the performances as little as possible and gave the actors maximum freedom. I saw Jack as a scientist, and I thought of him almost as a specimen that we put under a magnifying glass. I wanted the images to have incredible detail in the highlights and blacks as well as in the mid-tones. That’s why 35 mm film was the only option for our approach. We envisioned a stark, almost raw look with gravity and drama. Rather than conventional coverage, we used the strongest possible image at any given moment.” – Eigil Bryld
