Christopher Manley, ASC earned a degree at Temple University and subsequently studied at the American Film Institute, where he earned an Eastman Kodak Scholarship Award. A thesis project he photographed, My Mother Dreams the Satan’s Disciples in New York, won the Academy Award® for Best Live Action Short Film in 2000. He subsequently shot a number of small features for Roger Corman. His more recent credits include the television programs Prison Break, Drive and The Curse of King Tut’s Tomb. Manley garnered ASC Outstanding Achievement Award nominations for Threat Matrix and CSI: NY. His feature credits include Gracie, Dahmer, Neo Ned, and Interpretation. This is Manley’s second consecutive Emmy® nomination for Mad Men.
Mad Men takes place in the world of high-powered, ambitious Madison Avenue advertising agencies, circa 1962. “Shut the Door. Have a Seat” is the third-season finale. Don (Jon Hamm) has a pivotal meeting with Connie (Chelcie Ross); Betty (January Jones) is the beneficiary of some interesting advice; and Pete (Vincent Kartheiser) has a serious sit-down with some clients.
“Our palette is basically dictated by the colors of the sets and wardrobe, which re-create what would have existed in the 1960s. We don’t use the postproduction to desaturate or to create a Technicolor look. We play it pretty straight. In the lighting, if things go a little bit too theatrical – if a backlight is a little too hot – it still feels right in terms of the period. That’s kind of exciting and liberating.” – Christopher Manley, ASC
