A good place to start would be to review the excellent paper by C. Bradley Hunt, published in the March 1982 SMPTE Journal. "Considerations in the Illumination of Photographic Darkrooms" provides a detailed tutorial on the physics and psychophysics of darkroom illumination and an overview of lighting options available at that time.
