Using subdued lighting in hallways, locker rooms, and break rooms helps to maintain dark adaptation. To maintain scotopic or rod vision, use the orange-red portion of the spectrum to illuminate these areas. (You Navy veterans know red lights were used on deck during night watch to maintain night vision.) In most cases, using the same type of lights as used in the darkroom, but at a higher level of illuminance, works well.
